By combining two different strings for the mains
and for the crosses the specific characteristics (material,
gauge, structure) of each type of string can be exploited to obtain much better performances than either of the strings would give if used individually. The main strings should be a monofilament (CO-Polyester) as they need to be strong and to be able to hold their initial tension very well so that the strings have good durability and good control. The surface of the mains will determine the grip on the ball. The cross strings will determine the qualities of playability. They need to be softer and more elastic than the mains to provide comfort and power. The feel of the hybrid comes from the crosses. For example, with a gut in the crosses it feels like a full restring in gut, but lasts much longer and holds the tension better.
